Bright Pink and gorgeous, pink bananas are often grown as an ornamental tree but they are also edible! Abundant and native to the Amazon, they catch your eye with their bright, beautiful color among all the greens of the jungle.
Unlike traditional bananas which grow in large heads hanging and growing downwards, pink bananas grow in smaller bunches and upright. As they ripen, the peel naturally opens, exposing the small white banana like a flower in bloom.
At this point the pink bananas are likely to be eaten by bats and birds alike. If you are watching closely for its moment of ripeness though, they are a fun treat! They do taste like a regular banana, perhaps sweeter, fruit-ier. The biggest difference is that they are full of seeds. Not just one, not a few, full. Little black seeds. That’s enough to deter me from eating them plain, but my husband and kids all just swallow the seeds whole.
I prefer to have them mixed with milk in the blender, then strained. All the flavor, none of the seeds! It’s a win-win in my book.
